Theda A. (Pete) Moss

Theda A. (Pete) Moss, 87, of Abilene passed away peacefully on July 31, 2018 at Hendrick Hospice Care Center. Services are being handled by Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

Pete was born in Provencal, Louisiana on February 1, 1931 to Homer and Annie Moss. The years of his youth were spent in rural Louisiana hunting and fishing and farming. Pete later moved to Abilene where he worked in the oilfield business as a driller all around West and Central Texas.

Pete married Reta Young on February 4, 1955 in Abilene, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Reta, in 2002. Pete is survived by his three daughters, Kay Hale, Tricia Boyd and husband Jimmy Boyd, Deborah Bruce and husband Philip Bruce, and five granddaughters, Mandy Boyd Whitley, Melinda Boyd Smith and husband David, Katy and Hannah Bruce, and Megan Hale.

Pete was known as ‘Pa’ to his four great-grandsons, Nolan and Mason Smith, and Jake and Luke Whitley. Pete loved his family and was an avid gardener, loved working the land. Pete was a great storyteller and loved to reminisce about the “good old days”. Pete was a true care taker of the land.

The quote by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings best describes Pete’s beliefs. “It seems to me that the earth may be borrowed, but not bought. It may be used, but not owned. It gives itself in response to love and tending, offers its seasonal flowering and fruiting. But we are tenants and not possessors, lovers and not masters. The land belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons; to the cosmic secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time.”

A graveside celebration of the life of Pete Moss will be held on Wednesday August 1 ^st at 10:00am in the Buffalo Gap Cemetery. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks for the loving care provided by the staff at Wisteria Place and to the staff at Hendrick Hospice Care Center.
