Vaughn Herron, loving husband, and father of four surviving children, passed away at the age of 86 on Thursday, December 15, 2022. A visitation will be on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street, with a private family burial on Thursday afternoon.
Vaughn was born at home on October 3, 1936, in the rural community of Guion, Texas to John Elmer (Jake) and Jachel Herron. He was an only child. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1955 and attended Draughn’s Business College. He married Burtra Ann Petitfils, his high school sweetheart, in 1959 and they had five children.
Vaughn began his retail career at Camera, Inc. in Abilene which developed his love and expertise for photography. Retail led him to several supervisory and management positions through the years, which included management of a western wear store and Tandy Leather. He retired from Walmart as department manager of the Camera department.
He loved fishing and bird watching. He was known for his many hobbies which included photography, leather tooling and woodworking. He made foot stools, baseball and hat racks, bird feeders and bird houses, which he painted, decorated, and gave away. Vaughn and Ann were members of the Hillcrest Church of Christ.
Vaughn is survived by his wife, Ann Herron, his sons Monty and Shaun Herron, daughters Athea (Ricky) Richardson and Hope Martin; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Alisa Herron.
