Sylvia Lois Pruitt, 87, of Abilene, passed away on November 4, 2022, at Hendrick Medical Center-North surrounded by her loving family. There will be a memorial service at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street, on Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Jeff Reid and Dr. John Whitten will officiate.
Sylvia was born on February 7, 1935, to Albert and Mary Vassar in Jones County. They lived on a farm in the country and moved into town (Anson) when she was in second grade. While working at the Super Dog stand in Abilene, she met the love of her life, J Lee Pruitt. On January 6, 1952, they married when she was 16 years old. At the time of his death in 2017, they had been married 65 years. She and J Lee were true partners in life. They shared the good times, worked through the difficult times, and exemplified a Christian marriage throughout their lives.
As the matriarch of the family, she was the epitome of the perfect wife, hostess, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She considered it an honor to serve others by opening up their home for wedding and baby showers, women’s socials, and church fellowships. As a wife and mother of three girls, she went back to school and earned her GED. Sylvia was employed by a local orthodontist and then spent several years employed by Abilene ISD until her retirement in 2005.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, J Lee Pruitt, grandson Wes Dickie, her parents, three brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by daughters: Paula Dickie and husband Mike; Connie Clark and husband Mike; and Drucilla Pruitt. She is also survived by grandchildren: Jennifer Brawley and husband Matt; Misty Cassle; Jennifer Clark; and Jacob Clark. Great grandchildren include Mason Brawley, James Cassle, Claire Cassle, Graycie Pearce, Emily Pearce, Kensie Bowen, Ryleigh Bowen, Hadley Laird, Asher Clark, Azzylynn Clark, and Jozalee Clark. Survivors also include numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of Hendrick Medical Center-North for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Abilene Education Foundation, PO Box 1999, Abilene, Texas, 79604. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.pbfuneraldirectors.com .
