Sammie Lynn Hansen, 71 of Tye, passed away in Merkel on Sunday, January 31, 2021. A memorial service will be held at the Merkel Church of Christ on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with an inurnment at 1:00 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.
Sammie was born in Stamford, Texas on August 4, 1949 to Henry and Lorene Hansen. In 1969, Sammie joined the Navy and served two tours of duty on the USS Hunley and the USS Paul Revere. Following his service, he returned home to start working as a truck driver and construction worker. On May 9, 1994, Sammie married Barbara Lakey and the couple shared 26 years together. Sammie was the type of person that always looked for opportunities to help others. He was good at making things with his hands and loved woodworking. He and Barbara’s greatest joy was babysitting grandkids, and now, great-grandkids and attending their sporting events, as well as various high school sports.
Sammie was preceded in death by his parents, step-son Michael, grandson Michael Newberry and brother Jim Hansen. He is survived by his wife Barbara; son Shayne Newberry and wife Melissa of Merkel; daughter Stacey Herring and husband Rick of Abilene; grandchildren Ricky Herring and Laura of Abilene, Meagan Packwood and Jayden of Abilene, Tyler Newberry and Carley of Merkel, Reagan Bustamante of Abilene and Austin Newberry and Kylee of Abilene; plus 8 wonderful great-grandchildren.
