Robert Craig Gooch

(1936 – 2024)

Psalm 1 16:15

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”

Robert Craig Gooch, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 10, 2024.

Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 :00 a.m. on Saturday, September 14 at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

Robert was born on June 27,1936 in Abilene, Texas, the son of Bert Dee “Pete” Gooch and LaRue.

He graduated from Wylie High School in 1954 then attended Texas A&M University graduating with honors and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry in 1959.

After graduating college, Robert married the love of his life, Janelle Long, on February 29, 1960 (a Leap Year Day). He was President of Gooch Packing Company for over twenty years (employing over 500 people). Robert was a lifetime member of Abilene Bible Church where he faithfully served as an Elder

Robert was actively involved in the city of Abilene and served on numerous boards including Bank of Commerce, Citizens National Bank, Hendrick Hospital, and Young Life. He additionally served on the boards of Central American Missions and Dallas Theological Seminary.

He continued his support of Abilene by serving on the Dyess Air Force Base Military Affairs Committee.

Robert was an avid reader and art collector. He generously donated what is now called “The Paramount Ghost”, a portrait of an unknown woman that still hangs upstairs in the historic Paramount Theatre.

In 1991 Robert started Absolutely World Class, a small barbeque and salsa production company which is currently managed by his grandson, Mason Gassaway.

To have known Robert was to know a true man of God. He was a kind, gentle, soft spoken, generous man who loved his God first and family second.

He was enthusiastic about life and had a passion for aviation, traveling, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, great food, and his beloved Aggies.

Like a massive tree that has fallen in the forest, he cannot be replaced. Our hearts are left with a tremendous void. However, as Christians, we do not grieve as those who have no hope but rest on the promises of God that we will one day be reunited. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

Until then, Dad, we love you!

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Bert Dee “Pete” Gooch and LaRue. Survivors include his loving wife, Janelle of 64 years, brother Ray (Peggi) Gooch and sister Merry (Chris) Christiansen.

He leaves behind three daughters: Merinda Gassaway, Cheri (Mark) Hudson, and Lana (Shawn) Zullo, and seven grandchildren: Ryan (Kaycie) Hudson, Mason (Katherine) Gassaway, Madison (Brian) Matero, McCullen (Hayley) Gassaway, Sabra (Zach) Carlton, Gabby Zullo, and Breana Zullo.
