Richard L. Melton

Richard L. Melton, 81, of Abilene, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019.  Funeral service will be on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Southern Hills Church of Christ, 3666 Buffalo Gap Road, with Danny Minton and Robert Oglesby officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Roby Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, January 20, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

Richard was born on November 28, 1937 in Roby, Texas to Dick and Ethel Melton.  He graduated from Roby High School in 1955 and cherished each of his graduating classmates.  He was a 1959 graduate of Abilene Christian College and continued post graduate work there.  In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Jane Hale, in Roby.  He spent two years serving his country in the U.S. Army.  Following his tour of duty, he had a 23 year career with Sears, being transferred to Clovis, New Mexico, Midland, Texas, Port Arthur and Abilene.  After retiring from Sears, he became an insurance agent, having another career of 23 years.

Richard’s greatest attribute was loving and caring for people.  He served as an elder for 30 years in the Southern Hills Church of Christ.  He served in his community by delivering meals to the home bound through Meals on Wheels for about 40 years and he was a member of the Greater Abilene Kiwanis Club for 40 years.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Jane Melton of Abilene and their son Paul Melton of Rockwall, Texas; brother and sister-in-law James and Melinda Hale of Springdale, Arkansas, plus lots of Melton cousins whom he loved dearly.
