Richard E. (Dick) Garrett, Md

Richard Earl (Dick) Garrett, MD, 88, of Abilene passed away October 13, 2017.  A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10:00 am in the chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.  A time of visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 form 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Dick and his identical twin brother, Don, were born November 3, 1928 in Abilene, Texas to Rich and Doris Garrett.  He attended Abilene Christian Schools and graduated from Abilene Christian College in May 1949.  Following his service in the Korean War Dick attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.  While in medical school, Dick met the love of his life, Elizabeth Shoults, who was attending Nursing School at Parkland.  They married on June 9, 1956 and a year later they began their family.

In 1960, Dick and Elizabeth moved their family to Amarillo, Texas where he began his career as an Anesthesiologist.  Dick’s career spanned 4 decades and through his work and kindness he touched many lives.  He was a confiding friend and physician to all.  Dick served as a Bible class teacher, deacon and elder at Southwest Church of Christ.  Dick retired in 1996 and shortly after he and Elizabeth moved to Abilene, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth, as well as his 4 daughters and son; Beth Fullerton and her husband Cliff of Parker, TX; Becky Hendrix and her husband Butch (deceased) of Abilene; Paula Garrett of Richardson, TX; Rick Garrett and his wife Amy of Flower Mound, TX ; and Donna Eason and her husband Scott of Keller, TX; 13 grandchildren, 4 grandson in-laws, and 4 great grandchildren.
