On the hot sunny Texas morning of August 20th, Richard Allen Cox, aged 85, joined our sweet mother in heaven. A visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street. Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the MAC at the University Church of Christ, 733 E.N. 16th Street. He was born to Allen and Lillian Cox on June 29th, 1938 at their home in Beaumont, Texas.
Richard was an accomplished teacher, having earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at Lamar University, a bachelor's of English at the University of Texas, a master of arts in English literature at Duke University and his PHD in English from the University of Texas. He enjoyed 32 years as a professor of English at Abilene Christian University. When he wasn't teaching, Richard was involved in his church as a deacon, elder, and teacher. He loved to read, travel, and work in his garden.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Welsh Cox, his parents Allen and Lillian Cox, and his sister Goldie Lee Reaves. Richard is survived by his children, Kendall Cox and his wife Sonja of Merkel, Texas, his daughter Sadie Weaver and her husband Forrest of Abilene, Texas, his grandchildren Blake Davis of Jacksonville, Florida, Sara Davis of Jackson, Wyoming, Andrew Dyer of Abilene, Texas, and Bill Weaver of Abilene, Texas, his brother Ron Cox of San Antonio, Texas and his nieces Kim Elliott of Tampa, Florida, and Sarah Cerda of San Antonio, Texas.
