Philip Larry Oltmann, 77, passed away Wednesday, August 18th, in Abilene, Texas. He was born July 14th, 1944 in Pana, Illinois to Milton and Wilma (Redeker) Oltmann.
A “Son of the Prairie,” Phil was raised in Nokomis, Illinois, on a beautiful farm along with older brother Marvin and older sister Joyce (Grieves). He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran school (1950-1958) and he graduated from Nokomis High School in 1962. Phil continued his education at Southern Illinois University in Agricultural Business where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree. During his studies he interned for Del Monte Corporation then was employed by them for 28 years in Minnesota, Illinois, and Texas. He was active in his churches as a youth sponsor, deacon, and elder. His confirmation verse is Matthew 6:33-“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” NKJV
Philip was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nokomis, Illinois. He is survived by his wife Doris (Herrmann). They were married 55 years. Phil loved his family very much.
Along with Doris he is survived by his oldest daughter, Michelle (Boyland) and husband Kurt; and his son Kenneth and wife Heather (Moore) Oltmann. He is predeceased by a daughter, Denise Lea (Ward). He leaves behind six grandchildren: Trek Philip Boyland, Katherine Denise Boyland, Kelly Jane Boyland, Ryan Kenneth Oltmann, Alaina Faith Cavin and Olivia Grace Cavin. One of Phil’s greatest joys was traveling with Doris and his children/grandchildren. He visited all 50 of the United States and many parts of Europe, including a family farmstead in Germany. He enjoyed an active role in Master Gardeners and spent much time outside in his garden and yard.
A Celebration of Life Service/Funeral will be on September 11, 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Weatherford, Texas. Later this Fall an Interment will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Nokomis, Illinois.
His family will deeply miss his wide smile, positive outlook, and overall cheerfulness. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the ALS Association, Texas Chapter at www.alstexas.org/donate/ , or a charity of your choice.
