Peggy Linell Stokes

Peggy Linell Stokes, 94, passed away at a hospital in Abilene, Texas on May 4, 2017. Local arrangements are being handled by Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

Peggy Linell Stokes was born in Artesia, New Mexico in 1922, but spent most of her life in the Denver, Colorado area where she married her husband, Harold Stokes, in 1955.

While in Denver she helped start a local Action Center in Jefferson County and also worked with a Synod Church Group to establish low-income housing in the Metro area.

In 1982 she and her husband, Harold decided to retire in Roswell, New Mexico area and stayed until 1988 during which time she worked with 2 consultants to establish the Roswell Downtown Historic District. Quite a few outlying farms and ranches were also placed on the National Register at that time. In 1985 she worked with a committee of 5 to print a book about this work. The book “Treasure of History” started a series of local history books printed by the Historic Society of S.E. New Mexico. Treasures of History II, and III and IV followed.

In 1988 she and her husband, Harold, moved to a retirement community called Green Valley, and later to Las Cruces New Mexico returning to Roswell in 1994. Since that time she has volunteered in the archival department of the Historic Society with Elvis Fleming. In 2007 she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold after a 52 year marriage. She was an active member of Assistance League of Chaves County of Roswell, Symphony Guild and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by three step children, Sue Bullard of Virginia, Craig and Gordon Stokes of Abilene, Texas, as well as 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Roswell Historical Society, Spring River Park and Zoo, 1306 E College Blvd, Roswell, NM 88201 or the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2801 w. 4 th St. Roswell, New Mexico.
