David Lundgren

November 9, 1945 — December 31, 2024

Paul “David” Lundgren, of Hawley, went to be with his Lord & Savior December 31st, 2024 after a long battle with Alzeimer’s disease. Memorial services will be held Friday, January 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl, Texas with Pastor Cliff Stewart of First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene officiating.

David was born November 9, 1945 to Leroy & Dorothy Lundgren in Stamford, Texas. He attended school in Lueders where he was a noted athlete & hard worker, farming cotton with his dad. He graduated in 1964. He continued his education graduating from McMurry College where he was on the golf team. This was just the beginning of a lifelong passion with what David would call the greatest game.  On Saturdays rain or shine you would find David with his regular foursome on the links of Tangle Oaks or Diamondback Golf Clubs. He took his wife and kids to Fredericksburg to play golf and shop multiple times a year and enjoyed attending the Colonial PGA Tournament held annually in Ft. Worth. He made sure that his children and grandchildren had an opportunity to learn his favorite pastime. “Golf is a game you can play your whole life” and David did until the last two years when his health would not allow it, but he still enjoyed taking a ride in the golf cart.

Throughout his life he excelled at many activities. A talented artist, David enjoyed painting landscapes and even had his oil paintings displayed at the Stamford Art Show and won blue ribbons at county fairs (secretly entered by his daughter, Ann). In retirement, he gave several paintings as gifts to close family and friends which are especially treasured. Never one to sit out of fun, he could be found in the middle of a competitive ping pong or kickball game with his grandchildren long into his 70’s (& would likely win too). He loved taking his kids to the movies (007, mysteries, and westerns were his favorite)!

David was known for his dry sense of humor, generosity & honest dealings. His Uncle Wayne always said, “The only person I could trust with a million dollars and know that every cent would get back to me is Davy. No one is as honest and trustworthy as Davy.”

At the age of 38, he met the love of his life,Diane, on a blind date set up by his lifelong friend, Stephen Haterius. Six months later the two were married in friend Bill & Chris Bradshaw’s backyard, combining their families. The couple was married 41 years. David especially loved history and enjoyed traveling to the places he read about. His kids joked that the character of Chevy Chase from National Lampoon's Vacation was taken from road trips of their childhood.

David was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church, serving on the church council numerous times. He was always willing to help, but preferred a role out of the limelight. During the bi-annual church Smorgasbord he could be found washing dishes with a cheerful heart. After retirement David attended First Central Presbyterian Church, served as an Elder, and kept washing dishes as a Logos volunteer. Although his children did not know it until later, David was a member of the Army National Reserves during the Vietnam conflict (but humbly he never stood to be recognized for his military service as he did not see action).

David’s early career in the 1970’s was in coaching football & teaching high school history. He later became a Petroleum Landman, owning  & operating his own brokerage firm. He retired after 40 + years in the industry. He is credited as apprenticing many people, including his two sons. He worked alongside his younger son, John, for the last ten years of his career.

His kind heart, quick wit and sweet spirit were his greatest testimony, drawn from his strong faith. He knew that the manner in which you live your life and how you treat others is how you show the love of Jesus.  “Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” - Philippians 1:27 He was quiet, genuine and always made people feel better for having been in his company.  David’s impeccable reputation for trustworthiness, humility, and integrity is how he will be remembered. “A good name is more desirable than great riches…” - Proverbs 22:1

David  was preceded in death by his parents, Uncle Ray Lundgren, as well as six additional amazing aunts and uncles. David is survived by his loving wife, Diane, and five children; Greg Lundgren, Ann Heathington, Cydni Morton, John Heathington, & Heather Martin, their spouses, 13 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, two siblings, numerous cousins and friends.

A special thank you to Clyde Nursing Center & Big Country Hospice for caring for David the last month of his life. If desired, the family requests donation to Wounded Warriors (9777 CR 459 Anson, TX) in lieu of flowers.
