Mickie was born in Winston-Salem, NC on February 20, 1931, to Reece & Blanche Creek. She grew up in a small town near Winston-Salem. She was an outstanding basketball and softball player as well as a great student. Mickie graduated from Clemmons High School in 1949 and married her high school sweetheart, Bob Warner, in 1950. They welcomed their first child, Steve, in 1952 and then their daughter, Lisa, in 1955. In 1957 they decided to move across the country to Texas to enroll at Abilene Christian College (ACU). After arriving in Abilene, Mickie worked as a dental assistant for Dr. John L. Estes for four years. In 1961 Bob and Mickie moved into their house on Spears Circle and never left. In 1966 she graduated from ACC magna cum laude. Following college, Mickie taught 3rd grade at Dyess Elementary School for 26 years. At age 62 she retired from teaching and started a 30-year pursuit of her many interests in life. Mickie enjoyed playing golf, doing yard work, quilting, listening to a varied range of music, and swimming. Bob and Mickie loved to travel and did so all over the world. She was an avid reader of a wide variety of books and topics. Mickie loved animals and would routinely “instruct” whoever was nearby to her to watch whatever animal event was taking place on the TV or outside on the lawn. She had many special pets over the years. Mickie was a longtime member at University Church of Christ (66 years). Her faith was deeply meaningful to her. Her relationship with Jesus shaped the way she lived her life. Mickie also loved her family. Abilene was where she spent most of her life, but North Carolina was always “Home” to her. She looked forward to traveling back every year to spend time with her family back home. She loved going to Myrtle Beach and the Blue Ridge Mountains with her siblings. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bob and Mickie’s house has always been the hub for the family to gather.
Mickie was preceded in death by parents Reece & Blanche Cheek, her sister Clara Mae Cheek, and her brothers Bobby Cheek, Rex Cheek & Darrell Cheek. She is survived by her husband, Bob Warner, brother Hugh Cheek, her son Steve Warner & daughter-in-law Karen Warner, daughter Lisa Miller & son-in-law Al Miller, grandchildren, Julie FitzGerald & husband James, Aaron Miller & wife Elizabeth, Chad Warner & wife Haley, Austin Miller & wife Connie, Elissa Brown and Sara Bordeaux.
