Michael John Waite

May 25, 1934 — June 22, 2024

John Waite, 90, of Abilene, TX passed away peacefully Saturday June 22, 2024.

John was born May 25,1934 in Reading, Berkshire England. He grew up in a loving family with his mum, dad and four sisters. Some of his favorite childhood memories include times of playing the accordion for American soldiers during WWII. They filled his case with candy and gum to the delight of his friends in the neighborhood. He served in the Coldstream Guards for the British army in the 1950’s.  John was a devoted family man who loved and cared for his first wife, two daughters and a son.

His talent as a pianist allowed him to share his gift in every phase of his life.  After long days of delivering grocery goods across the English countryside he would play piano for local establishments. When he moved to Livermore, CA in the late 1990’s John’s talent brought joy to all in the local Senior Center.

John and Hiroko, his wife of 25 years enjoyed traveling, bowling, ballroom dancing, golfing, cooking and hosting parties for their friends. John received local acclaim for his near perfect bowling games and top average for his team.  His humility, abundant joy and polite manner exuded love to everyone.  People eagerly reciprocated their love for John.  Even in his latter days when some hospital visits were required, the doctors, nurses and staff would comment that he was a “delightful” man.

He is survived by his wife, Hiroko, sister June and family, son Mark, grandchildren Martine, Nadine, Donna, Louise, Michael, Christopher, Leanne and many greatgrandchildren.  He is also survived by his stepchildren, Tina, Tim, Thomas, David, and grandchildren, Beth, Brian and Mary. He was preceded in death by his sisters Jean, Pamela and Janet, his first wife Janet, and daughters Nicola and Julia.

The care John received at Lyndale Assisted Living and Chisholm Court Place in Abilene this past year made life so much easier for him.  The communities embraced John and Hiroko providing numerous days of enjoyment.  We are grateful for all the care given to John in his last months at Chisholm Court.  The staff’s hard work, talent, teamwork, dedication and genuine kindness blessed John and his entire family.  We are also grateful for Dr. William Shudde, nurse Ruby and the Abilene Family Practice staff for their excellent care.

John’s life will be celebrated by a small gathering of family in Abilene, TX.  We will enjoy memories with pictures, CD’s of John’s piano playing, Chinese food and Apple Crumble with ice cream. We would love to hear your favorite memories of John.  Please leave your comments on this website.
