Marie Chenault Currey

July 1, 1926 — December 25, 2021

Marie Chenault Currey, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and proud daughter of her state and nation, died Dec. 25, 2021, in Abilene. She was 95. A visitation for family and friends is planned Thursday evening Dec 30, from 5-6:30 at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut, in Abilene, preceding a private family graveside service.

Marie was born, July 1, 1926, in Sweeny, Texas, the third of six children born to Barry and Allie Clark Chenault.  She grew up in Sweeny and graduated from high school there in 1943 and then came to Abilene Christian College where she met Jack Keith Currey. The couple married Aug. 21, 1947, after she received her bachelor’s degree.

Always active, Marie was a teacher and softball coach in Ysleta, Sweeny and Austin, Texas, schools.  They later lived in New Gulf, Boling and Galveston, Texas, before settling in Abilene in 1956 where Jack established his law practice.

In Abilene, they raised their two sons, Billie and Barry and welcomed their wives, Leslie and Tonya as daughters whom she loved.

In addition to supporting the many activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Marie was an avid tennis player rated as a 3.5 player by the USTA.  She played on two Abilene teams that won the USTA Texas Section and played in a USTA National Championship Tournament.

At University Church of Christ where she was a member for more than 65 years, Marie sought ways to care for others, care for them well and always with a smile. Among other quiet paths of service, she initiated planning of a funeral meal ministry and remained actively involved in it until her health failed.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, U.S. Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and a life member of Women for ACU.

Her large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews described her as the sweetest person they had ever known.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Jack Currey of Abilene, and their sons: Billie Currey and Leslie Gray Currey of Abilene and Barry Currey and Tonya Bingham Currey of Lubbock. She is also survived by grandchildren Brady and his wife Linsey Currey of Abilene and their children Karlie and Lillie Kate, and Allie Currey Moore and her husband Chad of Frisco and their children Emily, Will and Hailey.

Those wishing to honor Marie’s memory may do so through their caring service to others and through a gift to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1651 Pine Street,  Abilene, Texas 79601 or Christian Service Center, 3185 North 10 th , Abilene, Texas 79603, or to the charity of their choice.  Condolences may be offered to the family online at www.pbfuneraldirectors.com.
