Mamie Frances Bailey

Mamie Frances Long Bailey, passed from this life on July 23, 2023.  She was born on October 28, 1925, in Stevensburg, Culpeper County, Virginia, to Clement Alger Long and Florence Arvilla Barker.

She completed most of her schooling at the Brandy schools in Culpeper County, Virginia. During World War II the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia where she completed her senior year at George Washington High School. Upon graduation she worked three years as a typist/bookkeeper at the Eastern Area of the American Red Cross.

Mamie met John Robert Bailey, Jr. of Lamesa, Texas when he was stationed at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia. They married on August 17, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland and then moved to Klondike, Texas where they worked the family farm for several years.

In 1967 they moved to Winnsboro, Texas where they owned and ran a lumber yard. Upon selling the lumber yard in 1969, they moved to Hamilton, Texas where they purchased and ran a flower shop for a couple of years.  Upon selling the flower shop, she later worked three years at the Hamilton Public Library and was extensively involved in volunteer work.

In 1996 they move to Allen, Texas and then later in 2002 she moved to Lucas, Texas and lived with her daughter and son-in-law until her passing.

Mamie was known for her love and devotion to her God, her family, and her country.  She had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor.  She was an avid reader until her eyesight failed. In faith she was member of the church of Christ.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her six children: J.C. Bailey of Cushing, Texas; Glenn (wife Carol) Bailey of Allen, Texas; Larry (wife Denise) Bailey of Wewoka, Oklahoma; Kenny Bailey of LaGrange, Texas; Timothy (wife Tina) Bailey of Jacksonville, Texas; Debbie (husband Frank) Demblowski of Lucas, Texas.  She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at the Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery, Abilene, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross or the Wounded Warrior Project.
