L.M. (Mac) Mcwhorter

February 24, 1921 — December 15, 2018

L. M. (Mac) McWhorter passed into the loving arms of Jesus on December 15, 2018 at the age of 97. He was born in Madison County Texas on February 24, 1921 to Thomas Newton McWhorter and Lela Ellen Peters McWhorter. He served in the US Army as a Sergeant in the Medical Corp during World War II and was stationed for part of his service time at Camp Barkley in Abilene. While at Camp Barkley he met and married LaVern Townsend McWhorter. Following his discharge from the Army in 1946 they made their home in Abilene where he was the Owner/Operator of Abilene Sheet Metal, Inc for 35 years. Most people knew Mac as a successful businessman, skilled fisherman, hunter, and domino player. He helped host and guide for several Celebrity Quail Hunts in Abilene and the Abilene Domino Tournaments. He also was a member and former President of the Abilene B.A.S.S. Club. LaVern passed away in 1993 and he married Barbara Bigham of Snyder, Texas in 1995. He and Barbara have continued to live in Abilene since that time. Mac has been a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ for over 50 years.

Mac was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Barbara, two daughters; Jean McMillon and husband Donald and Jane Godard and husband Don, grandchildren; Mark McMillon, Matt McMillon and wife Rebecca, Marci Phillips and husband John, and their families, David Bearden and Amber Shifflett, Dustie Turner and husband Jay and their families, a step daughter, Brenda Billingsley and her children Karrie, Kraig and Kallie and their families. He is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren, a soon to be great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

A family visitation will be held at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St., Monday evening December 17 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. A private family burial will be held at Hamby Cemetery at 10:00 AM Tuesday December 18, followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life at Hillcrest Church of Christ, 650 E Ambler Ave at 11 :00 AM.
