Laverne Phillips

LaVerne Phillips, 90 of Abilene, passed away at a local care center on December 3, 2020.  A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday, December 12, 2020, in the Cedar Hill section of the Abilene City Cemetery with Jeff Reid officiating.  A visitation with the family will be held Friday evening from 6-8 pm at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.  It is requested that those who attend either gathering please practice social distancing and wear a mask.

Dora LaVerne Phillips was born to T.A. and Mary Lee Havins in Abilene, Texas on July 24, 1930.  She married Joseph Weldon Phillips in Abilene on September 3 ^rd , 1948 and together they made Abilene their home.  For many years LaVerne worked as a dental receptionist for Dr. Jack Herman until her retirement and was a very active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 65 years.

LaVerne was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church and attended the Angels Sunday School class.  She loved working on special events at the Taylor County Expo Center and was an avid sports fan.

Surviving LaVerne are her three children; Ronny Phillips, Mike Phillips (Cindi) and Pamela Rhoda (John), grandchildren; Jonathan Phillips, Jennifer Rhoda, Jessica Rhoda, Noah Phillips and Chris Copeman, stepsister, Peggy Moore (Williard), stepbrother, James Nelson Edwards and many nieces, nephews and close friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, stepmother, Cleta Hall Edwards Havins, brothers, Dale Havins and Delton J. Havins, sister-in-law, Claudine Wilson, stepsister, LaVerne Wilkinson, and daughter-in-law, Donna Jo Phillips.
