Juan Rodriguez, Jr.

April 17, 1944 — January 11, 2025

Juan “Johnny” Rodriguez, Jr., son of Juan and Rosa (Morales) Rodriguez, was born on April 17, 1944, in Coleman, Texas, and went to be with the Lord on January 11, 2025, in Abilene, Texas.

Johnny was the youngest of his siblings, affectionately known as the “baby brother” to four brothers—Francisco, Celestino, Amado, and Reymundo Ramirez—and two sisters, Elena Davila and Rosa Sanchez. He began working at an early age and built a life defined by hard work and dedication. After a 15-year career in the oil fields, Johnny transitioned to Abilene ISD, where he retired from the Transportation Department after 20 years of service. While working at Abilene ISD, he also held a part-time job with City Link, where he made many dear friends and created lasting memories.

Johnny’s first marriage blessed him with two daughters, Diana and Priscilla. On May 3, 1975, Johnny married the love of his life, Mary Helen Peña. In 2017, they renewed their vows in a sacramental marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where they were also parishioners. Together, they shared nearly 50 years of marriage and raised two daughters, Irene and Irma. He also lovingly embraced his “bonus daughter,” Camilla, the granddaughter of his late brother, Celestino.

Johnny enjoyed serving his community and was an active member of Highland Church of Christ for many years. While there, he served by driving for the Young at Heart Ministry and as an usher. He also enjoyed volunteering with his wife at the Paramount Theater.

Johnny had many talents. At one time, he could outplay almost anyone in golf or bowling. He was a jokester who enjoyed board and card games, always “challenging the rules” with a mischievous smile. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Rosa, and his brothers, Amado, Celestino, and Reymundo. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Helen; his daughters, Diana Cook, Priscilla Rodriguez, Irene Rodriguez, and Irma Weatherford (and husband, Koby); and his “bonus daughter,” Camilla Ferguson (and husband, Jon). He is also survived by his brother, Francisco Ramirez, and his sisters, Elena Davila and Rosa Sanchez.

Johnny was lovingly known as “Wito” to his grandchildren: Homer B Cook, Angela Schmitt; James, John, and Rosemary Campbell; Olivia and Gabriel Weatherford; and his bonus grandchildren, Kenley and Ashlyn Ferguson. In their later years, Johnny and his wife found great joy and love in becoming honorary grandparents to three young families who embraced them as their own. He also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and family friends who became like family, all of whom will forever cherish his memory.

Johnny’s life was a testament to love, family, faith, and service, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 16th at 11 am in the chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.  A visitation with the family will also be held in the chapel on Wednesday evening the 15th from 5-6pm with a Rosary to begin at 6:00pm.
