Joe Somers Putnam

Joe Somers Putnam, 66, of Abilene, passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street. A visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joe was born to Buddy and Loyce Putnam on September 17, 1955, in Throckmorton, Texas.

Joe married the love of his life, Jenny, on October 13, 2001, in Abilene, Texas, where they made their home. Joe and Jenny had a deep, abiding love for one another and the Lord, which was always the center of their relationship. They were faithful Christians and members of the Hillcrest Church of Christ. Joe’s family was the sunshine of his life, and he adored his children, grandchildren and extended family.

Joe had a heart as big as his laugh and loved people. His unique sense of humor combined quirky observations and one-liners made all those around him belly-laugh. Every year he looked forward to Throckmorton’s Homecoming event where he enjoyed seeing old friends and sharing stories.

Joe worked in the oil field all his life in different capacities, including offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Joe enjoyed snow skiing, cooking, and made scrumptious breakfast burritos. He had a special affinity for animals and lovingly took care of his horses, chickens and cats.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe Ben “Buddy” Putnam, and his mother, Oma Loyce [Riley] Putnam Charles. Survivors include, wife, Jenny and their two children, Ben and Clara Putnam, and children Paige Switzer and Dave Putnam of Junction, and their mother Darla Hammonds; sisters, Micki Bullock, and husband, John, of Newcastle, and Luretta Putnam of Throckmorton; grandchildren, Storey and Journee Switzer and Addison and Lincoln Putnam, of Junction; many nieces and nephews; and, his beloved dog, Max.
