Abilene

Jimmy Melton McDonald, Jr., age 69, of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025. He was born on April 14, 1956, at Fort Carson, Colorado, to Jimmy McDonald, Sr. and June Ray McDonald.

Jimmy was one of seven brothers and was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and June Crooks, and by his brothers Stan, Ken, Russ, Doug, and Richard. He is survived by his loving sister, Renee Barbee and her husband Wil, and by his stepbrother, Bob Crooks and his wife Connie. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him dearly.

Born with a congenital heart defect, Jimmy underwent his first open-heart surgery at the age of five at William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas. That surgery was notably delayed when his cardiac team was called to assist with the Mercury Project at NASA. Throughout his life, Jimmy faced numerous heart, brain, and other major surgeries, as well as countless hospital stays—always with remarkable strength, patience, and courage.

Though his health prevented him from physically participating in sports, Jimmy was a devoted fan. He loved Major League Baseball, especially the Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs. He was also a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan—until the departure of Tom Landry. Jimmy had a competitive streak of his own and often shined in card games with family, especially with his sister-in-law Bonnie of San Antonio and Shannon at Morada.

Jimmy had a unique and special personality. While he held onto a childlike joy in many things, he also possessed a sharp mind—particularly when it came to solving problems and recalling trivia. He was the trivia king at his assisted living community, especially in movie and music categories. He loved classic films, oldies music, and detective shows, and he always solved the mystery before anyone else.

Jimmy’s kind spirit, humor, and resilience left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Morada of Abilene for going above and beyond to fulfill Jimmy’s wish to return to his assisted living home. Their care and compassion brought great comfort to him and his family in his final days. Special thanks also go to Hendrick Hospice Care and the dedicated nursing staff at Windcrest Healthcare Center for their exceptional kindness and support.
