Jimmie Franklin Terrell

Jimmie F. Terrell, 87, of Abilene passed away on October 16 th , 2022 at Hendrick Hospice Care Center.  A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday October 23 rd in the auditorium of Southern Hills Church of Christ. Visitation with the family will follow the service.  A private family graveside will be held on Monday at the Texas State Veteran Cemetery in Abilene.

Jimmie was born on May 13, 1935 to Jack and Alma Terrell.  In his early years, Jimmie was raised on a farm in Haskell County.  When he was 9 years old the family moved to Sweetwater.  In 1953 Jimmie graduated from Sweetwater High School.

After high school he went to work for TxDOT where he was trained as a surveyor.  In 1957 he entered the US Army and served as a surveyor in South Korea.  After he left the Army, Jimmie went to work for Texaco as a surveyor for 2 years and then returned to TxDOT.  While at TxDOT, he received extensive training by a civil engineer in developing construction plans, specifications, and estimate.  He took some math correspondence courses and was studying for the test to be registered as an engineer.  During that time, he was one of the first in the state to use arial photography and engineering computer programs on many projects.  In 1981 he was asked to transfer to the computer division in Austin, Texas where he worked with engineers throughout the state in using their programs.

In 1986, Jimmie took early retirement from TxDOT and went to work for an engineering consulting firm.  He worked for them for more than 13 years designing highway projects throughout the state.  He retired in 1999.

Throughout the years Jimmie was very involved in the churches that he and his wife Brenda attended with their family.  He served as a deacon for many years and then in 1984 was appointed an elder at Westover Hills Church of Christ in Austin.  In 2000, they moved to Lampasas and he served as an elder there for 6 years.  In 2007 they moved to Abilene to be closer to family.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mildred Perry and a brother Clyde.  He is survived by his wife Brenda, his daughter Joni Carlson, his son Rev LeRev (aka Kenneth Terrell), his son Wayne Terrell and his daughter Willow Layne (aka Jami Elayne).  He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
