Herbert E. Patterson, Jr.

June 17, 1951 — January 7, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Herb Patterson, Jr. who left us on January 7th, 2024, after a long battle with lung disease.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and brother, and an exceptional member of his community.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Freedom Fellowship Church, 941 Chestnut Street.  The family will receive visitors at 10:00 a.m. at the church.

Herb was born on June 17th,1951 and was preceded in death by his parents, Jo Patterson and Herb Patterson Sr. and stepmother, Billie , brother Bobby Patterson and sister Pat Black.

He attended high school in Abilene and Midland, graduating from Midland Lee in 1969. Herb went on to proudly serve in the Unites States Air Force as a Security Police Officer from 1973 To 1977, receiving outstanding security award for the 51st squadron, Policeman of The Year, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Herb met the love of his life, Nancy, in 1978 and they were blessed to be married for 43 years. When Herb and Nancy married, he embraced the unexpected calling of parenthood fully and adopted his kids in 1981, loving and raising them as his own. His commitment to his family was a testament of his compassionate spirit, extending beyond biological ties to create a legacy of love and acceptance. As his children navigate life, they will always carry forward the lesson of unconditional love he modeled.

He was a long-time member of Highland church of Christ and used his God given talent to bless and inspire many as he played guitar in the Freedom Fellowship praise band.

Herb had a heart filled with compassion, dedicating his time in recent years ministering at Kairos Inside offering solace and guidance to those in most need.

Herb’s devotion extended beyond his ministry; his 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren were all very special to him. He cherished each one of them and made wonderful memories with them from fishing and hunting outings to boating adventures, cheering them on in sports or going on special vacations together and in turn they adored him dearly.

He is survived by his wife Nancy and his children: Brent Patterson and wife Lauren, Christie Bird and husband Les and Cathy Suarez and husband Steve; his grandchildren Jared, Lauren and her husband McKinnon, Amber and fiancé Ethan, Jacie, Grace, Ashlynn, Brayden, Thomas and Sara and great grandchildren Leighton, Nolen and Callum; along with his sister Donna and brother-in-law Jack; and his beloved nieces and their families.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to his favorite charity Kairos of Abilene or Freedom Fellowship church. The family wishes to express our deep gratitude to the staff of Hendrick Hospice for their loving care of our husband and father.

Herb will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace.
