Eldon was born in Motley County, Feb. 11, 1933, and at 3 years old, moved to Haskell, Texas, growing up there and graduating from Haskell High School. He was talented in athletics, particularly football and track, winning his many medals in the low hurdles and high hurdles. After majoring in business in college and running track on a scholarship at Howard Payne, he was drafted into the Army in 1956. He went to Korea, trained in infantry but while there, was asked to be on the TDY Track Team. After the military, he moved to Big Spring and met Brenda Aberegg and they married in October 1960, moving to McCamey with National Oilfield Supply. The next year, 1961, took them to Nocona, TX., where their 1st child, Wanda Kay, was born. Three years later, they moved to Denver City, Tx. and lived there with Eldon continuing to work for National Oilfield Supply Company and raising a family with Brenda adding a daughter, Shana Raye, in 1969. Roots grew down deep while there, loving people, rooting for the Denver City Mustangs and serving God with the Denver City Church of Christ, but Eldon and Brenda uprooted and moved to Abilene in 2015 after 50 plus years in Denver City, to be close to their daughters. After retiring from National Supply, Eldon enjoyed working at Collin’s Dept. Store and Denver City Junior High. He said his greatest achievements in life were marrying Brenda and having their children. He enjoyed his grandchildren as they came along and his great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Brenda, twin sons Kelly Craig and Kelvin Greg and by his parents, Willis Amonett & Alta Mullins Amonett, and stepmom Eunice Pannell Amonett. Also, a brother Roy Amonett, sister Dorothy Amonett Strickland, stepsister Nannie Pannell Burns, and stepbrothers Bill and James Pannell.
He is survived by daughter Wanda Kay and husband Johnny (JR) Rodriguez and daughter Shana Raye and husband David Hutton. Grandchildren Dara Rodriguez, Erika Chapman (Cort), Dave Hutton III (Hailey), Dan Hutton, Holly Hutton, Micah Hutton. Great granddaughters, Ellie Hutton, Moriah Hutton, Mercy Hutton and Kenya Ray Chapman.
Many thanks to Kindred Hospice for their care these three years. They have lifted our hearts in many ways. The family suggests any memorials be made to New Mexico Christian Children’s Home (Portales, NM) or Baker Heights Church of Christ (Abilene, TX.).
