Doris Marlene (Stephenson) Barnett

June 26, 1931 — January 17, 2022

Doris Marlene (Stephenson) Barnett, 90, passed from this life on Monday, January 17, in  Weatherford, Texas.  She was the daughter of J.B. and Ruth Stephenson and was born on June 26, 1931, in Dallas.  She married Hobart Barnett in September 1949 after meeting him at the Lindale Church of Christ in Houston.

She loved children and rejoiced when, after 10 years of marriage, son Kevin was born, and 5 years later, daughter Melissa. She doted on her children and her husband.  Later, she worked as a credit bureau agent, a hospital receptionist, a nursing home aide, and child caregiver, the last of which showcased her exceptional talents.  As a Welcome Wagon representative, she used her outgoing personality to acquaint newcomers to the community in Freeport, Texas. The children she cared for developed language and life skills quickly under her tutelage. She later lived in Irving, Alvarado, Cleburne, Azle, and Denton in order to be near her precious children and grandchildren.

She always held membership in the local Church of Christ and loved the Lord GOD all her life. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting items for friends and family. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines barbershop singers. All of her endeavors were based on her desire to please GOD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Ruth Stephenson, husband Hobart Barnett, daughter Melissa Watson, and sister Marjorie Anderson.  She is survived by her sister Mary Anne Ray of Abilene, sister-in-law Wilma Kimberlin, beloved son Kevin and wife Anita, grandchildren Matthew, Chelsea, Jennifer, Lauren, Traci, twins Logan and Zachary, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on February 4, 2022, at 2:00PM at Highland Church of Christ, S. 5 th and Highland, in Abilene with later events in the DFW area and the Houston Veterans Cemetery where she will be buried with her husband.
