Dixie was born on January 3, 1925 in Moody, Texas to Oran and Ola Bee Parker.  At 6 months of age, the family moved to Winters, Texas where Dixie spend all her childhood and teenage years.  Following her graduation from Winters High School, Dixie went to work at Bruce Field in Ballinger during World War II.  Dixie’s job was to take off the back wheel of PT-19 planes, wash and grease it and put it back on.  She also worked nights in the form’s office with her friend, Velma Rice and the two drove back and forth to Winters in Dixie’s Model A Coupe.  It was during this time she met William Thomas Coleman.  The two were married in Winters on June 29, 1944.

In 1955, Dixie and W.T. moved to Abilene and never left.  She worked as a seamstress for TS Langford, in the food services department of the AISD, and as a custodial worked at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.  Dixie then became a foster grandparent at the Abilene State Supported Living Center.  She loved being a granny!

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, O.R. and Ola Bee Parker, her husband, W.T. Coleman and her brother, R.B. Parker.  She is survived by her children, Judy Ann Coffman of Abilene; Tommye Ellis of Hamby; Ray Coleman of San Angelo; and Bobby Wayne Coleman and James David Coleman of Abilene; brother Max Parker of Sulfur Springs; plus 9 grandchildren and 13 Great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made in Dixie’s name to the Abilene State School Foster Grandparent Program.
