(Berry) (Muckleroy) Burns, 97, went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 11, 2023.  Funeral service will be on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.  Burial will follow at Iberis Cemetery.  A visitation will be on Friday, April 14, 2023 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Devona was born December 30, 1925 at the family home in Maverick Community of Runnels County, Texas to Alva and Blanche Berry.

Devona was a devout Christian and loved the Lord. She attended Woodlawn Church of Christ, read her Bible and followed the scripture on a daily basis. She loved her Lord and showed her children how to do the same. She loved her husband, Billy F. Burns of 54 years. They were married on January 24,1969, in her parents home. She really enjoyed watching Bill play the fiddle and they loved playing 42. She also loved her children and Grandchildren very much.

Devona lived through some tough times, the Depression, Dust bowl, severe drought, Pearl Harbor, WWII, the invention of television and survived 17 Presidents! However, Devona also had great adventures. The one she loved the most, was a trip to Germany which was one of her greatest memories and a trip of a lifetime back in 1974.

Devona had an incredible working career. She worked at Safeway for 10 years as a checker. During that time, she got to be liberated from wearing skirts/dresses to pants for work, which in that day and time was unheard of. She also worked at the Durham Peanut plant from 1957-1960. She told a story about working the graveyard shift where she would have to drive herself to work late at night. She said she would always talk with our Lord on her trips to work and back home. One night she had a flat tire. She was scared being out there by herself! A car passed by and turned around and as they got closer, much to her surprise it was a the Highway Patrol! They stopped and helped fix the flat tire and she went on her merry way. To this day she still calls them her Angels!

Devona was a giving person and one of her favorite things to do was the La Leche League. Devona was a leader and trainer the La Leche League for 15 years. When her daughter, Marcia Joy, and daughter-in-law, Carol had babies, Devona wanted to help. She trained and sponsored several young ladies to become leaders! This was important to her. She worked with her daughter, Marcia Joy, doing jail commissary until the contract expired in 2005. She was a seamstress on the side doing alterations and custom sewing for various customers and delivered Meals on Wheels one day a week. She started delivering Meals on Wheels in 1978. At 79, she broke her hip which lead her to taking a break.  Devona drove with her friend Esta until Esta couldn't go anymore. Devona was 93 when she quit driving for them. She then started teaching a women's Bible study. This was one of the most rewarding times for her.

Devona was preceded in death by her parents Alva and Blanche Berry; her first husband Edwin Muckleroy; sons Barney and Guy Muckleroy; daughter Marcia Joy (Muckleroy) Mears; and brothers Conny Berry and Eldon Berry.

Devona is survived by her husband Billy F. Burns of Abilene; sons Jeffrey (Juanita) Muckleroy of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Patton (Carol) Muckleroy of Lufkin, Texas; Brian (Sherry) Burns of Abilene, Texas; Billy Don (Christine) Burns of Lago Vista, Texas; Brent (Elizabeth) Burns of Abilene, Texas; Daughter Brenda Walker of Granbury Texas; Grandchildren Mike Muckleroy, Donna Clem, Missy Brooks, Meredith Abels, Angela Horne, Jeremiah Muckleroy, Leigh Paul, Shay Beeson, Paula Heinemann, Blake Mears and Paul Mears, Tonya Mears-Doby, Kaylee Channell, Troy Burns, Angie Oliver, Keri Sanders, Steven Walker, Spencer Walker, Carson Burns and Emily Bartley, David Walker.

She also has 32 Great Grandchildren and 29 Great Great Grandchildren and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
