Charles Glenn Anderson

September 20, 1930 — November 5, 2024

Charles Glenn Anderson passed away in his sleep on November 5, 2024 at the age of 94.

Charles, or “Choc” as he was called when he was a boy, was born on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma on September 20, 1930. He spent his childhood growing up in the country near Mt. Pleasant, Texas. As a young boy, he spent time hunting squirrels and fishing to provide food for his large family of 9.

Charles was the first of his siblings to graduate from high school. Following graduation, he worked in copper mines in Arizona up until he was drafted into the United States Air Force. He was stationed near Munich, Germany, from 1950-1954. Although he recalled being homesick, he had fond memories of exploring the countries of Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, and more. He documented his memories from his time in the military later in 1997, and gifted copies of his recollections to his grandchildren.

Following his tour of duty in the Air Force, he moved to Abilene, Texas to attend Abilene Christian University, which later became a beloved venue for Charles and his family. There, he met his future wife, Margie Newhouse, and they married in 1955. They moved to Snyder, Texas, where Charles taught Speech and English at the local school. He and Margie raised two sons, Charles Jr. and Marcus, there. After teaching for 4 years, he was promoted to Principal of Lamar Junior High, where he served until his retirement in 1990. He always stayed active during his time in Snyder. He raised cattle on a small ranch, served as President of the Snyder School Board and served as an Elder of the Church of Christ.

In 2002, Charles and Margie moved to Abilene to be near their children and grandchildren. Charles continued to serve as an Elder in the Church of Christ while in Abilene. He also enjoyed writing for the local news, tending to his home garden, and attending many of his grandchildren’s activities.

Charles was a prolific writer and author throughout his life. He often wrote articles for the Abilene Reporter News and reported on events at Dyess Air Force Base. He had a deep interest in history and wrote short stories told to him by Veterans of WWII. He also wrote and published four books depicting West Texas history. His fascination in history and facts was illustrated excellently through his publishings.

Charles never formally retired from any type of work. He loved spending time with Margie, participating in the Church and serving his family. He and Margie often hosted family over the holidays and Charles would quiz the family over biblical and historical events before digging into any feast. He also dressed up at Santa Claus on a handful of occasions.

His wife, Margie, passed away in February 2024. He is survived by his two sons, Charles Jr. and Marcus Anderson; 8 grandchildren, Rachael, Miriam, Bethany, Luke, Kayli, Hanna, Breanna and Charlie; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Charles and Margie raised a loving, happy, and Christian family. We appreciate and celebrate their wonderful lives and memories. The memories with them are a blessing to all who knew them and will always be remembered.
