Carolyn Yvonne Glenn, 62, died November 12, 2017 from complications of ALS, a disease that ravaged her body but never her wit. Cremation arrangements are through Piersall Funeral Directors of Abilene.
Carolyn was born March 18, 1955 in Abilene, TX to Allen and Esme’ Glenn. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1973 and from the University of Texas Austin. She worked as a respiratory therapist at Hendrick’s Hospital in Abilene and retired from Cook Children’s Hospital, Ft. Worth.
Carolyn never considered herself to be particularly brave or special, but her open and honest battle with bulimia proved how brave she was. She overcame bulimia using the Smart Recovery method and became a group leader for others facing life challenges. She was a true role model for her family and friends as she faced her personal battles with grace and humor. Carolyn enjoyed studying Spanish and watching Spanish telenovelas. She volunteered to tutor young school children in reading and translated for families of Hispanic patients at Cook Children’s. She loved cats and arranged for her beloved kitty Nadia to have an amazing Mommy Two.
She is survived by her parents, Allen & Esme’ of Abilene; brother Paul (Donna) Glenn; sisters Joann Glenn Harwell and Laura Glenn; uncles Don Estes and Jim (Trish) Glenn; and aunts Mary Glenn and Diane King. She is also survived by seven fiercely loved nephews: Evan (Maris) and Ian Glenn, Roddy, Colby, and Brady Harwell, and Connor and Kyle Tubbs. There are many, many friends to survive her as well: the “Paws and Peeps” group who, with sweet Nadia, were there for her through thick and thin; her friends from Smart Recovery and her Living Lightly with Chronic Illness group; friend “extraordinaire” Cleta Willingham, her eighth “adopted nephew” Tyler Malone, and co-workers from Cook’s. Carolyn and family also want to thank the wonderful staff at Brightpointe Nursing Home for their loving care while she was there.
Carolyn taught us a great deal about the human condition; about accepting life’s challenges while maintaining joy in living. We had times together to laugh about silly things and cry about things we could not control. If there is a legacy Carolyn has left us with, it will be to appreciate each and every moment of every day without question. In true fashion to Carolyn’s life and her wishes, a party to celebrate her life and to reflect on how she touched each one of us will be held at Miguel’s Mex Tex Café, 3001 S. Danville Drive on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. A similar celebration will be held in the DFW area at a later date.
Any memorials may be made to your local public library, the DFW Purebred Cat Rescue, or charity of choice.
Life well lived, Carolyn. We love you!
