Candace Sue Shelton, a beloved teacher and champion for marginalized students, left this world on April 6, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on September 17, 1944, in Pampa, Texas, Candace dedicated her life to uplifting those around her, profoundly impacting the lives of displaced and racially profiled students throughout her career in education with the Abilene Independent School District as well as other districts throughout Texas.
Candace earned her master's degree and became a guiding light at the forefront of education. Her unwavering support for students extended beyond the classroom, as she actively contributed her time to initiatives at Boy's Ranch and Hendrick Home, always advocating for those in need. Among her many accomplishments she also published a book in the early eighties and was featured in People magazine.
Beyond her profound commitment to education and community service, Candace was a woman of many passions. She found joy in gardening, crafting, and indulging in her favorite soap operas. A music lover at heart, she also embraced every opportunity to travel, experiencing the beauty of the world around her. Upon retirement she found joy in serving her church with her unwavering faith and zest. She was generous to fault, her grandchildren never wanted for anything. She transferred her passion for reading and music to her daughter and grandchildren.
Known for her spirited nature, Candace enjoyed "friendly" competition in card games, 42 and word games, bringing laughter and joy to family and friends.
Candace is survived by her loving daughter, Ashley Sites as well as her husband Michael Sites. The apples of her eye, her grandchildren, Jonathan Hardesty and wife Erika, Shalisa Burcham and husband Luke, Christopher Hardesty, Anthony Sites and Jesse Sites. The twinkles in her eye were saved for her great granddaughters, Addie Jane Hurt, Sage Ivee Hardesty and Brooklyn Jane and Blakely Grace Hardesty, who will carry her legacy of generosity and kindness.
She is also survived by sister Sandra Noblitt, brother Mark Noblitt, sisters-in- law Jerry Clark and Carolyn Shelton as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service honoring the incredible life of Candace Sue Shelton will take place on April 12, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Elmwood West United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating her extraordinary contributions to the lives of countless students and her passions that brought light into so many hearts. In true Candace spirit, let us come together to share stories, laughter, and love as we remember a remarkable woman who embodied compassion and strength.
Candace was preceded in death by: husband, James Shelton, father, Ivan Noblitt, mother, Frances Noblitt, brother, Micheal Noblitt, and niece Candy Kay Gandy.
