Gertrude Whittenburg

October 17, 1916 — December 7, 2010

Gertrude Whittenburg, 94 of Midland, formerly of Sweetwater, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at a Midland Hospital. A service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday, December 10, 2010 at the 4th and Elm Street Church of Christ in Sweetwater under the direction of Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St. Abilene, TX. A visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm in the church parlor.

Gertrude was born to E.A. and Mary Alice Richards on October 17, 1916 in San Angelo, Texas. She grew up in Fort Worth, TX and attended Abilene Christian College where she met the love of her life Thomas S. Whittenburg. They married in Fort Worth on September 4, 1938 and they spent over 55 years together. After their marriage they moved to Nolan County where she was a homemaker and stayed at home raising their two children. Later Gertrude worked as a dietician for the Sweetwater School District and retired from there in 1980 after 28 years of service. Gertrude was a long time member of the 4th and Elm Church of Christ.

Surviving Gertrude are her son, Wendell Whittenburg and wife Joyce of Sweetwater, a daughter Barbara Murphy and husband Richard of Midland, Texas as well as 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. In addition, she will be greatly missed by a host of friends at the Polo Park Estates in Midland. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her mother and father, two sisters and a brother .
