John Roy Townsend

John Roy Townsend, 79 of Abilene, passed away Friday, November 26, 2010 at a local hospital. A service is scheduled for 10:00 am Monday, November 29th at the Piersall Benton Chapel, 733 Butternut St. with a burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Sunday from 3-5pm at the funeral home.

John was born January 21, 1931 in San Angelo, Texas to John Aubrey and Zinda Turner Townsend. He spent his childhood in San Angelo and after graduating from high school he moved to Abilene to attend Draughon’s Business College. In 1952, John met the love of his life Dorothy Murray and on June 26, 1953 they were married in Abilene.

John's first love was spending time with his wife, two daughters and his precious grandchildren but when he wasn't doing that, he enjoyed singing bass in Barbershop groups and three years ago received his 50 year pen. John worked in an auto parts dealership where he developed many special friendships. He was also a member of the South 11th and Willis St. Church of Christ for nearly 50 years where he often used his musical talents to lead singing.

Surviving John are his wife Dorothy, two daughters; Susan Townsend and Terrye Johnson, three brothers; Alan and wife Sharon of Colorado, Chuck and wife Marjorie of Seymour, and J.D. and wife Sue of Abilene. He is also survived by his three wonderful grandchildren, Rebecca, Russell, and Christina Johnson as well as many other extended family members and close friends. Preceding him in death were his parents.
