Jon P. Buckley, 63, of Hempstead, New York passed away May 25, 2010 in Abilene, Texas. There will be a visitation and memorial service, Sunday May 30, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Piersall Funeral Directors Chapel at 733 Butternut Street.
Jon was born in Mineola, New York on February 5, 1947 to Jean Smith Turner and John S. Buckley. Jon attended Rutgers University in New Jersey where he earned a scholarship and played football. He had a true talent for mathematics but was also a wonderfully gifted writer and word smith. Jon was a loyal fan of the New York Jets football team and in an off year would also root for the Giants. He was a clerk in the New Hyde Park, New York Post Office where he retired after his health would no longer allow him to work. In 2009, Jon and his wife moved from New York to Maryland and then Abilene to be closer to his daughter Nia and her family. He loved to meet people and exlpore the town while cruising in his scooter. Jon thought the people in Abilene were extremely kind and friendly. He truly enjoyed his time in this community.
Surviving Jon are his wife Leslie Payton Buckley, his mother Jean Turner Smith, sons; Steven Peters and Jaymes Buckley, daughters; Paula Peters, Shayla Peters, Bianca Tavarez, Aja Jhingory and husband Martin and Nia Ledesma and husband Nick. In addition; he is survived by four grandchildren, Portia Peters, Chezeray Peebles-Buckley, Ansharra Wilson and Jeremiah Buckley. Jon will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
