Callie R Daughdrill, 102 of Abilene, passed away Friday April 16th, 2010 at Hendrick Medical Center. A service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday April 18th at the A&M Church of Christ. A visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Saturday at Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.
Callie was born July 31, 1907 in (Princeton)McKinney, Texas to Walter Sterling Rainwater and Nora NeSmith Rainwater. She received a teaching degree from East Texas State Teachers College and spent 30 years as a Teacher in Texas. She was married to Marvin Walker Daughdrill on April 6, 1931 in Lovington, NM and together they raised three children. Callie lived in many different places because of Marvin's career with Shell Oil Company; including Oklahoma City, Quitman, Texas, Victoria, College Station, Fort Worth and finally Abilene. Callie taught for twenty five years in Victoria, Texas and pioneered the Head Start Program. She also owned and operated the Mother Goose pre-K and kindergarten schools in Victoria. Callie was a very patriotic woman and involved citizen. She believed in God, family and country, and never missed an opportunity to vote.
Surviving Callie are her children Kathleene Turk and husband George of Yoakum, TX, U.S. Navy CDR (Ret) Charles Daughdrill and wife Carolyn of Fraser, CO, and Marlene Treadway of Abilene, widow of Dr. Everett Fay Treadway as well as 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Music was a passion of Callie's because of her family's gospel quartet on WBAP radio. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren share that love. There were four great grandchildren in ACU theater and voice, with her namesake ,Callie , now attending as a member of the ACU A cappella Choir, chapel praise team and recipient of voice scholarships.
Callie Daughdrill was a proud donor of a practice room in the new Williams Performing Arts Center and the four great grandchildren have benefited from it. Callie established the Callie Performing Arts Scholarship for young performer in 2004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Mrs. Daughdrill to the Callie Performing Arts Scholarship at Abilene Christian University or to World Christian Broadcasting, a mission outreach to the middle east and Asia. 605 Bradley Ct., Franklin, TN 37067.
