James Haskell McKinnon, 65 of Abilene, passed away Monday February 22nd, 2010 at a local medical center. A service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Thursday the 25th at 2nd Baptist Church, 901 Victoria St under the direction of Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St with Pastors Robert Chambers and Ernie Kight presiding. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 pm.
James was born December 22, 1944 to Haskell "Chubby" McKinnon and Elnora Gifford McKinnon in Abilene. He was raised in the area and graduated from Abilene High School. James married his high school sweetheart Darla Lockhart on June 11, 1965 and together they raised 4 wonderful children. There were many things that James loved to do including hunting, singing, building things, spending time with family and friends but most importantly he loved preaching and telling others about Jesus. He did so faithfully as a Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Stamford and as a Deacon of 2nd Baptist Church in Abilene. James also enjoyed his "day job" as a salesman for Willis Supply and considered himself fortunate to work for Darrell Knight.
Surviving James are his wife Darla, three sons, Jimmy Daryl McKinnon and wife Suzette of Farmington, NM and their children Matthew, Michael, Tyler, Arynn, and Dalton, Joe Michael McKinnon and wife Kristin of Fredericksburg, TX and their children Michael Tanner and Madison, and son Cody Weathersby, USAF of Presidio Monterey, CA; a daughter, Trista Weathersby and Jason Hammond and their children Isaak, Jordy, and Javion; a sister, Cindy and husband Daine Beasley of Abilene as well as many other extended family members and close friends. James was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Bobby Wayne McKinnon.
