James Laurence Callaway, known to many friends as “Cowboy”, was born on February 12, 1948 to James W. Callaway and Wilma Rae Exum Callaway in Cisco, Texas. He left this earth on February 15th, 2010 to join his Daddy in the arms of the Lord. Visitation will be held at Piersall-Benton Funeral Home, 733 Butternut St. Thursday, February 18th from 5-7pm. Graveside services will be held in Cisco, Texas on Friday February 19th at 11:00 AM.
James grew up and attended school in Cisco, Haskell, Eula and Abilene. Jimmy married Mary E. Lancaster on August 4th, 1966. He joined the Navy in 1967. Mary and Jimmy resided in Millington, Tennessee during his time in the service. Later they raised three girls in Abilene, Texas. Jimmy worked at Shook Tire Company for many years being known as one of the best “Tire Men” in the area. Later, he worked for McAlister Oil Company, Bandera Drilling Company, and Western Auto.
Among his many interests were country music, especially Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash. He loved watching NASCAR races, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. being his favorites. He enjoyed long drives and family trips. Most memorable to his children were the spur of the moment, get up in the middle of the night “lets go” ones.
Preceding him in death was his daddy, James W. Callaway, who passed away on October 31st, 2009. Survivors include his mother Wilma, his former wife Mary Lancaster and their three daughters: Kyla Callaway, her husband Terry, and their three children, Jordon, David, and Cheyenne; Starla Callaway, and her four children Justin, Brandon, Dakotah, and Destiny; Jaime Love, her husband Jonathan, and their three girls Paradice, Casey, and Caribbean. He is also survived by two sisters Betty Jo Reyes; Bonnell Templin, and her husband Jerry, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all, especially his three daughters: Kyla, Starla, and Jaime.
