Roy Richard Parks, 90, of Abilene, died on Sunday, February 05, 2017 at home surrounded by family.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 pm at Piersall Funeral Home, a funeral service will be on Thursday, February 9, at 10:00 am at University Church of Christ, and a graveside service will be held on Friday, February 10 at 11:00 am at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas, TX.
Roy was born August 31, 1926 in Itasca, TX to Roy Lee and Nettie Mae Parks. He was the 4 th of 7 children. He was valedictorian of the Class of 1943, attended Hill County Junior College before being drafted into the Army in 1944 at age 18. Roy was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in 1946 (age 20) after serving 21 months. Roy enthusiastically pursued his degree at Southern Methodist University and graduated with honors in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Dallas Power & Light Co. quickly hired this new, bright, young, single engineer. He began a career that spanned 40 years from 1947-1987. His job description ranged from student engineer to Head of the Planning Department for Texas Utilities, as the power companies grew and changed.
His wife of 23 years, Eleanor, died of cancer in 1978. He married Charlene in 1981 and enjoyed 20 years of marriage before her death in 2001.
Roy’s parents and all of his siblings predeceased him. Roy is survived by his wife of 13 years, Naoma; his two daughters and their husbands: Kim & Bill Brock of McAllen, TX and Kay & Foy Pinson of Abilene, TX; stepchildren: Larry & Linda Bridgesmith of Nashville, TN, Bob & Patti Davy of Ft. Myers, FL, Jeff & Barbie Moon of Chattanooga, TN; Rick Guinn of Japan, and Steven Guinn of Lufkin, TX. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Roy and Naoma enjoyed sojourning, woodworking, and volunteering at the Christian Service Center. Roy’s steadfast faith and his love for God shown in his service to others leaves a legacy of genuine goodness and love to all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Christian Service Center in Abilene, and/or Christian Care Center in Mesquite, TX. Condolences may be offered to the family online on www.pbfuneraldirectors.com.
