Following graduation, Darrell joined the Army as a Clerk Typist and served for nearly 2 years in Europe before being honorably discharged. He was also a member of the base Honor Guard and received a Good Conduct medal and a Sharpshooter Badge for his skill with a rifle.
Following his discharge from the Army, Darrell went back to school and earned two Master's degrees, one in Education from East Texas State University and the other in Counseling from Southwest Missouri State University. Darrell and "Frosty" would enjoy the next 47 years side by side, traveling together and going on many mission trips for the church, serving in countries like Nicaragua, Honduras and Brazil. They also enjoyed attending the Pan-Am Lecture Trips to Peru and Ecuador. They retired to Abilene in 2002.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Frosty. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Inez Sumner, and by his sister, Carla Inez. Darrell will be remembered for his generosity and his wit. He was quick to help anyone in need and had a personality that allowed his unique Texas wit to shine.
