Loyd Wilmeth Hare

Retired Lt. Colonel Loyd Wilmeth Hare, 91 of Abilene, passed away May 23rd, 2009 at Hendrick Medical Center. His service will be 10:00 am Thursday May 28th, 2009 at Piersall Chapel, 733 Butternut St with burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park with full military honors. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.

Loyd Hare was born to William Pleasant Hare and Laura Richardson Hare on May 28th, 1917 in Ferris, Texas. After graduating with a degree in Social Science, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and began a 21 year career. He ultimately retired in March of 1963 as a Lt. Colonel. During his time in the Air Force he met and married the love of his life Irene and they were married in Reno, Nevada in 1946. Together they raised three sons Charles, Steven and Bill. After his retirement he finished his masters degree and then taught middle school for fifteen years. After his teaching career he had an income tax business. Loyd and Irene moved to Abilene in 1999. They made Highland Church of Christ their church home.

Loyd is survived by his wife Irene, his three sons and their families Charles and Pat Hare and their daughter Dawn Custer; Steven and Marilyn Hare and their twins Joshua Hare and Alison Hughes, Bill and Debbie Hare and their children Madison and Katherine Hare and Rachel Meyer, three great grandchildren, a Brother, Roy Hare and “Adopted” granddaughter Lindsay Motes and husband Alan. Loyd had an impact on many people during his lifetime and he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
