Thomas Wendell Whittenburg, 75 of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016 after a long illness, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fourth & Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater with Royce Sartain and Bill Johnston officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the parlor of the Fourth & Elm Church of Christ on Thursday, March 17, 2016 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Wendell was born on September 9, 1940 in Sweetwater, Texas to Thomas S. and Gertrude (Richards) Whittenburg. He married Joyce Brown on July 27, 1962 in Sweetwater. He was a teacher and a farmer until his retirement in 2005. He was an Elder and Sunday school teacher at the Fourth & Elm Church of Christ for over 30 years.
He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Joyce Whittenburg, daughter Alyce Garland and husband Rob, son Scott Whittenburg and wife Sherrie, all of Sweetwater, and daughter Anita Riley and husband Damon of Little Elm, Texas; 6 grandchildren, Whitt Bonner, Ashleigh Riley, Kaylen Whittenburg, Ethan Whittenburg, Adyson Riley and Elizabeth Bonner; 2 great grandsons, Kayden McCann and Kamdon Whittenburg; sister Barbara Murphy and husband Richard of Midland, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Gertrude Whittenburg.
Pallbearers will be Billy Whisenant, Jerry Riggs, Gene Fox, Joe Paty, Jim Wilks and Darrell Chappell. Honorary pallbearers will be James Holloman, Bob Norris, W.B. Whisenant, Bill Johnston and Russell High.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornerstone Christian School, 400 Elm Street, Sweetwater, Texas, 79556
