Denise Cummings Lowry, 90 of Abilene, passed away at Hendrick Medical Center on January 28, 2016. A service is scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 in the Piersall Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside service to follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories. A visitation with the family will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
Denise was born August 22, 1925 to J. Clyde and Mary Belle Greene Cummings in Lockney, Texas. After high school she received her B.S. degree from Texas Tech University. Immediately following graduation, she began teaching Home Economics at Lubbock High School where she worked for three years. After marrying L.B. Lowry at the Broadway Street Church of Christ in Lubbock in 1948, Denise and L.B moved to Abilene where L.B. started Lowry’s Trim Shop. Denise worked for the Taylor County Extension Office for the first year and half after moving to Abilene but stayed at home once they started their family. When their three children were all at least in middle school, Denise went back to teaching in the Abilene ISD where she spent 21 years at Cooper High School in the Home Economics Department.
The Lowry’s were very active members of Highland Church of Christ. L.B. served on the original board of Christian Homes and he and Denise kept the first infant to be placed by Christian Homes.
Denise is survived by her three children, Brenda Cherise French and husband Johnny of Garland, TX, Dr. David Neil Lowry and wife Cary Williams of Edmond, OK, Kathy Susan Box and husband Gordon of Albuquerque, N.M., five grand-children, Cody West Campbell, Jesse Leigh Campbell and husband Rob Orr, Brent Bishop Lowry and wife Cristina, David Ross Lowry, Ryan Shane French and wife Carissa and one great-grandchild Kyleigh Marie Campbell. She is also survived by one sister, Clydelle Lowry and husband Neil and a niece Janice Gaither and husband Tom. Denise was preceded in death by her husband L.B., her parents, a sister and brother-in-law Kathrine and J.W. Elrod.
