Glenn V. Jones

Glenn V. Jones, 84 of Abilene, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Hendrick Hospice Center. Services will be Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street. A visitation with the family will be on Thursday, June 18 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Glenn was born in Abilene on February 21, 1931, the fourth of six children. His parents were N.O. and Verda K. Jones. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ. He was a faithful Christian having served as a deacon and an elder for churches of Christ in Lubbock and Arlington. Glenn left Abilene High short of graduation in order to pursue a baseball career. For a short time, he played for the Abilene Blue Sox, then the Midland Indians in the West Texas New Mexico League. He was not successful at the pro level, so he went to Paducah, Texas to play in a semi-pro league and met his life mate, Mildred Cate. They were married on September 22, 1950 in Lubbock.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, an infant son and a granddaughter. He is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, a brother, Bobby Jones and wife Hope of Abilene, a sister, Judy Brentham and husband Eddie of Grand Prairie; children Cheryl Jones of Abilene, Jamie Truitt of Abilene and Glenn David Jones and wife Marilyn of Hawley; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
