Johnny Esteven Hernandez, 57 of Abilene, passed away at Hendrick Medical Center on Thursday, February 26, 2015. Services are scheduled for Monday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street, with burial at 3:00 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be on Sunday, March 1 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Johnny was born on December 19, 1957 to Pedro and Maria Hernandez in Toledo, Ohio. At 19, Johnny joined the U.S. Air Force and would spend the next 14 years in service to his country. In August of 1990, Johnny was deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm and he received his honorable discharge from service a year later. Upon his return to Abilene, Johnny started working for the Texas Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer and would spend the next 20 years in that role until his retirement.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Maria Hernandez, and by a brother, Rudy Hernandez. He is survived by his former wife, Janie Seballos, whom he married in December of 1980; a step-son, Raymond Hernandez of Abilene and three daughters; Jenny Espinoza and husband Zacheri of Abilene, Rebecca Hernandez and fiancée Fernando Rocha of Abilene and Cristal Hernandez and fiancée Mike Williams of Abilene; plus 9 grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
