Ruth Flossie Reid, 90, died at a local hospital Monday, October 6, 2008. Services will be at the Piersall Chapel 733 Butternut on Thursday, October 9, at 5:00 pm. Burial will be by her husband in the historic Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, Virginia.
Ruth was born November 1, 1917 in Cumberland, Maryland, to George and Mary Stallings. Ruth worked for Fairchild Aircraft in Cumberland, Maryland, during World War II. When she reported for work the foreman was not pleased when five women reported for work. He said, "I asked for five men and they have sent me five women. What am I going to do with them?" He turned to Ruth and said: "Here, you drill these holes in the wing"(of the C119 aircraft) and she did. Ruth was resilient.
Ruth is survived by a son Braxton (Brad) Reid and wife Sally of Abilene and a grandson William Reid, granddaughters Sarah Gibson of Abilene and Julia Reid of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her brother Egbert Stallings of Cumberland, Maryland and her husband Braxton Reid, Sr.
Ruth lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1952 until 2004 when she moved to Abilene to be near her son, Brad, and his family.
The family expresses appreciation to Dr. Chad Ezzell, the staff at the Oaks of Radford Hills for their kindness and good care of her, and to the staff at Hendrick Medical Center for their professionalism in taking care of our mother and grandmother.
