Fredrick (Fred) N. Stirman, Jr.

March 15, 1927 — October 14, 2014

Fredrick N. Stirman, Jr., 87 of Abilene, passed away October 14, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center. A service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Woodlawn Church of Christ with a burial to follow in the Bear Springs Cemetery in Eastland County. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 pm at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.

Fred was born in Abilene, TX on March 15, 1927 to Fredrick N Stirman Sr. and Eula Faye French Stirman at his grandparents home. He was raised in Abilene until completing 1st grade at Valley View Elementary. He then moved several times with his family. He finished high school in Portland, OR after spending time in Sweetwater, and Odessa.

After graduating high school in 1945, Fred was drafted into the Army and he faithfully served his country in WWII. In 1946, after being honorably discharged Fred attended ACC. In 1948, he met the love of his life Gladine Jones and on June 10, 1949 they were married in Baytown, TX. Together they spent the next 65 years in Abilene, Texas, raising their family of three boys and supporting each other as they served in their church and as Fred worked as a teacher and coach for over 45 years in the AISD.

He served many years as President of the Abilene Chapter of TSTA. His great joy was teaching and coaching, seeing his students and athletes improve and excel. He especially loved watching his sons and grandchildren play and compete. He taught and coached over 5000 students and athletes.

He loved to travel and drive and he, with Gladine, visited all 50 states, 5 provinces in Canada and Mexico.

He and Gladine were founding charter members of the Woodlawn Church of Christ and he was passionate for mission work and was the chair of the mission committee for many years.

Preceding Fred in death were his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his loving wife Gladine, his three sons; Greg Stirman and wife Peggy, Gary Stirman and wife Julie and Glen Stirman and wife Brenda, three sisters; Lucy Townsend and husband Sam, Beth Gipson and husband John and Loma Howard and husband Dean, six granddaughters, five grandsons, and one great granddaughter as well as many other extended family members and close friends.
