L. Haven Miller, 95, of Abilene, passed away Monday September 15, 2008. A service is scheduled for 10:00 am Thursday, September 18th at Southern Hills Church of Christ Auditorium with burial following at Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 pm Wednesday at Piersall Benton Funeral Home, 733 Butternut St.
Leonard Haven Miller was born in Los Angeles, California on March 30, 1913 to William Edgar Miller and Emma Louis Lyttle Miller.
Haven had many accomplishments in his lifetime of service to Universities as a professor and to numerous churches as a preacher. As a professor at David Lipscomb for 7 years (1939-46) and ACU for 34 years (1946-80) he taught Spanish, English, French, Latin, Portuguese, and Bible. During his 74 year preaching career he had the privilege being the first full time minister at Madison Church of Christ near Nashville, as well as preaching at numerous churches in Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas. His passion for missions led him on over 90 trips to Mexico as well as 7 trips to Spain.
Haven will be greatly missed by his two daughters Ada and husband Dr. Carley Dodd of Abilene, and Deborah and husband Joe Hailey of Anson, Texas; a son, Stephen and wife Jean Miller of Garland, Texas; nine grandchildren, Kevin Miller, Holly (Ken) Machemehl, Jeremy (Jennie) Dodd, Dr. Matthew (Heather) Dodd, Philip (Tanji) Dodd, Joe Hailey III, Brian (Leslie) Hailey, Jennifer Dodd, and Sarah Hailey as well as nine great grandchildren, two step-sons, Dr. Jimmy (Cheron) Adrian, Carl Wayne (Nelia) Adrian, 6 step-grandchildren,and 6 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two spouses, first Sarah Beasley Miller and then Anna Pearl Adrian Miller.
