Alton Davis

January 8, 1941 — May 1, 2014

Alton (Sandy) Davis, 73, of Abilene, passed away on Thursday May 1, 2014. A celebration of Alton’s life is scheduled for 1:00 pm Monday, May 5th, at Hillcrest Church of Christ. Prior to the celebration, the burial will take place at 10:00 am in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday from 2-4 pm at Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.

Alton was born in Blackwell, Texas on January 8, 1941 to Dayton and Clara Davis. He was raised with his two brothers and four sisters in Sweetwater. Alton married the love of his life, Betty Dobbs, in Abilene on August 23, 1958, at the ages of 17 and 15. They enjoyed over 55 years of marriage, and were blessed with 5 children. In addition, he was the Dad to several foster children, including Charlie Mixon.
Alton began his baking career when Snowhite Bakery opened for business in 1957, retiring from Snowhite in 2008. He loved his career, his employees and his customers.

To those who knew him, Alton was gentle, strong, playful and dependable. He was unselfishly committed to his wife Betty and their children: Jenny, and husband Joe Putnam, Carra and husband Jimmy Carter, Tim Davis and wife Jennifer, Jon Davis and wife Vanessa, Addie and husband Jeremy Helms. Adored grandchildren include Hannah and husband Alex, Luke, Davis, Hope, Jill, Jake, Thomas, Grant, Ben and Clara.

Alton’s strength came from his belief, and trust, in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 118: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever. The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid."

Psalm 116: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

1st Thessalonians 4:13 "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no faith. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him."

1st Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus"

Additional survivors include sisters Audie Mae Smith, Ailene Brand, Nettie and husband Mannon Newman, Ruby and James Bagley. Sisters-in-law Billie Masters, Judy Davis and favorite cousins Russ and Fern Arendell.

He had a host of other family members and friends. His daily dose of love and laughter came from his McDonald’s “council” friends with whom he met daily.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers; Dalton and Doyle, his precious granddaughter Maddie and three brothers-in-law, Earl Brand, Boney Smith and Clay Masters.

The family requests that donations be made to Christian Homes of Abilene, the Ministry of Comfort and Hope at Hillcrest Church of Christ, or Zambia Mission Fund at Hillcrest Church of Christ, 650 E. Ambler, 79601.
