David Wayne Barnhill, 56 of Abilene, passed away at a local nursing center on Thursday, October 24, 2013. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Monday, October the 28th at Piersall Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St.
David was born in Spur, Texas to L.B. Barnhill, Jr. and Virginia Day Barnhill on June 4, 1957. He graduated from high school in Idalou, Texas and went on to attend Texas Tech University. In 1980 he moved to Abilene and immediately got involved with the expansion of the CityLink bus system so that people with disabilities could more easily find their way around the city. While working on that project he met the love of his life Pamela Lee Mims and on August 23, 1986 they were married in Nelson Park in Abilene.
David was a member of the Abilene Building Inspection Committee, the American with Disabilities Act Board, the Not Without Us Advisory Board and he was the co-founder of the Master's Handi-capable Fitness Center. In recent years, David and Pam have worked with the Abilene City Council to ensure sidewalks are available in high traffic areas so that handicapped citizens can lead more independent lives.
Surviving David are his wife Pamela, a son, Forrest, his mother Virginia, three brothers; Larry Barnhill, Robert Barnhill and L.B. (Dusty) Barnhill, III, a sister, Rose Ann Bolinger as well as many other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, L.B. Barnhill, Jr.
