Al V. Scott

February 16, 1938 — October 6, 2013

Altus “Al” Victor Scott, 75 of Abilene, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013. His service is scheduled 2:00 pm Thursday, October 10, 2013 at University Church of Christ with Dr. Gary McCaleb officiating. Burial will be held at Elmwood Memorial Park following the service. A visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-7 pm at Piersall-Benton Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St. in Abilene.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas to Altus Crutcher Scott and Victoria “Vickie” Stone Scott, Al was raised in Abilene where he lived most of his life. Al played baseball and was a pitcher at both Abilene High School and Abilene Christian University. His love for baseball is something he carried with him throughout his life. His interest and passion in America's favorite past-time is what led him to partner with ACU to reintroduce Baseball at his alma mater.

Over the years Al has been involved with and held leadership roles in various organizations including Rotary, the Abilene Zoological Society, Abilene Civic Ballet Co, St. John’s Elementary School and the Grover Nelson Zoological Foundation. He coached Little League Baseball and acted in several plays organized by the Abilene Community Theatre. He was raised at the University Church of Christ and as an adult was a member of Oakridge Church of Christ and Highland Church of Christ.

Al was full of conviction and a passionate man who had tremendous love and respect for the United States. He believed in personal responsibility and was a walking ambassador for the principles this country was founded on. This passion led him to get involved in local politics and, for a number of years Al was very active with the Taylor County Republican Party. On numerous occasions he served as a primary and state delegate for the Party, and during the 1980s, he and late wife and their best friends, were elected to be national delegates for President Ronald Reagan. Al was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.

It was through his unique and diverse volunteer roles and passions is where Al was fortunate to meet many of his lifelong friends – people who valued, respected, appreciated and loved Al for his intelligence, quick wit and unique sense of humor.

Surviving Al are his wife Judy Carson Scott; daughters Sherri Scott of Houston and Susan Scott Bennett her husband Brandt of Dallas; a son, Michael Scott of El Paso; and his beloved granddaughters, Abigail “Abby” Scott of El Paso and Victoria “Tori” Bennett of Dallas; his cousin Jack Scott and many other extended family members and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 39 years Dottie Mize Scott, their daughter Terri Scott and in-laws, Tommy and Ina Mize.

The family would like to thank Hendrick Hospice, Al's hospice nurse Lecia Adams and his private duty nurse Becky Sims. In lieu of flowers, the Scott family requests that donations be made to The Al & Dottie Scott Memorial Endowment which provides scholarships for ACU baseball players. Donations should be made payable to ACU at ACU Box 29130, Abilene, TX 79699. Please note in the memo line that your donation is for “The Al & Dottie Scott Memorial Endowment for ACU Baseball.” Condolences may be offered to the family at www.pbfuneraldirectors.com.
