Ophelia "Marie" Mathews, 84 of Abilene, passed away at her home on July 28, 2013. A visitation with the family will be held at 1:00 pm Friday August 2, 2013 in the Piersall Benton Chapel, 733 Butternut St. with a memorial service to follow at 2:00pm.
Marie was born on a farm outside of Franklin, Kentucky on November 5, 1928 to James and Martha Dyer. She was raised in Kentucky and attended school there. Marie was the wife of an airman and because of that traveled the world. She loved going to different countries and being active and volunteering on the bases where her family was stationed. She even received a service award from the USAF for her volunteer efforts.
In 1972, her family moved to Abilene to be stationed at Dyess and they decided to make it their permanent home. Over the years Marie has owned numerous rent houses. The families that rent her homes all think of her as their "Grandma".
Surviving Marie are her son Tim Mathews and wife Diane, a daughter Donna Hooper and husband Jimmy, a brother James Dyer and sisters; Neil and Lorine as well as 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren with one on the way, one great great grandchild and a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and 6 sisters.
