O.C. "Shorty" Gipson, 81 of Abilene, passed away at a local medical center after a long bout with cancer on April 4, 2013. Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday, April 8, 2013 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Abilene, with burial to follow at Cedar Gap Cemetery. No visitation will be held.
Shorty was born in Potosi, Texas to Frank and Ruby Gipson on March 3, 1932. He was raised in the Abilene area and spent most of his life here. He married Patsy Hargrove on August 8, 1952 and together they raised three sons and two daughters. Shorty loved to play the guitar and spend time making music and telling whoppers with family and friends. He was a diesel mechanic for Treanor Caterpillar.
In 1965 he moved his family to Hobbs, NM to work as a field mechanic for Rust Tractor. They moved back to Abilene in 1972.
Surviving Mr. Gipson are his wife Patsy, three sons; Oran C Gipson of Midland, Wayne Gipson and wife Kay of Shallowwater, TX, and Arley Gipson of Abilene, two daughters; Gale Rotan and husband George of Nolan, TX and Patricia Farley and husband Hoss of Canyon, Texas, a brother R.V. Gipson of Abilene, and a sister Jesse Doby of Abilene, as well as 12 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
